Three names, three things
Metro Redux vs Metro 2033
Checked 24 October 2026
Metro 2033, Metro 2033 Redux, and Metro Redux are three different answers. The 2010 game is the original. Metro 2033 Redux is the 2014 rebuild of that one game. Metro Redux is the collection name for 2033 Redux and Last Light Redux together.
The short answer
| Name | What it is | Buy it? |
|---|---|---|
| Metro 2033 (2010) | Original, THQ-era, old engine | Sold on GOG; not on Steam |
| Metro 2033 Redux | 2014 rebuild of that game on the Last Light engine | Yes, app 286690 |
| Metro Redux | 2033 Redux and Last Light Redux as a pair | Buy both, or a console bundle |
| Metro Exodus Redux | Not a product. Exodus has an Enhanced Edition | Do not search for it |
What the rebuild changed
2033 Redux uses Last Light's engine and combat, new lighting, Last Light character models, first-person story scenes, diaries, safes and keys, a day-night cycle, and the Survival and Spartan modes. The 2010 game had none of that mode split, and Ranger was paid DLC. Redux includes Ranger Mode. Some 2010 levels were merged. The walkthrough lists 27 chapter-select names. Community moral-point counts use different conventions and do not establish a guaranteed threshold; see endings.
What people mix in
- Last Light Complete Edition is not this comparison. It is only the second game. See Redux vs Complete Edition.
- Metro Exodus is a 2019 sequel. Its Enhanced Edition is not called Redux.
- The free 2026 patch is an upgrade to Redux, not a third version of the 2010 game. See the next-gen update.
- A 'Metro 2033 vs Battlefield' question is a different genre. This page does not score that matchup.
For the original presentation, Metro 2033 (2010) is officially available on GOG, restored through the Preservation Program in May 2026. For the remastered route, buy 2033 Redux and then Last Light Redux. Store links are on download. Order of the whole series, including 2039, is on games in order.
Questions
Are Metro 2033 and Metro Redux the same?
No. Metro Redux is the 2014 collection. Metro 2033 usually means the 2010 original, which Steam no longer sells.
Is 2033 Redux a remaster or a remake?
4A rebuilt it on the Last Light engine and rules. Call it a rebuild. Last Light Redux is the remaster of the two.
